Stacks on Route 66 is a breakfast spot in LA you need to try.
For myself and my boyfriend Juan, this was our second visit. The first time was so delicious that we were hoping a return to Stacks would be just as good. On our second go, we knew what to expect and what to look forward to, we simply hoped the restaurant would continue on their streak. Before heading out to explore a few nearby parks, we stopped at the restaurant and crossed our fingers.
What did we want: something easy, reliable, and comforting. And that’s exactly what it was.
We walked in to be greeted with the same pleasant familiarity we had on our first visit. It’s the kind of familiarity that doesn’t need to surprise you to be good. It just needs to be consistent. And it is.
Juan ordered the Veggie Omelette ($18.99). It may have read as a simple choice, but it was one that delivered in all the ways it should. Filled with fresh mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, and broccoli, and paired with hash browns and toast, it was the kind of plate that can get you started for the day. The vegetables were cooked just right, the eggs soft and fluffy, and everything worked together without trying to competing for attention.
But what made his plate his was the addition.
It was a biscuit with a cup of gravy, and that’s where things leaned into comfort. The biscuit soft, the gravy rich, adding that extra layer that turns a standard breakfast into something a little more memorable. Something that would probably make us want to return for a third time.
I went in a completely different direction.
Stuffed French Toast ($17.99). Not just any French toast, instead it was thick, indulgent blocks filled with a sweet cheese and a hint of vanilla, all tucked inside egg-battered bread and topped with cinnamon sugar and both strawberry and blueberry compote. It was one of those dishes that feels a little playful the moment it arrives at the table. Maybe a little silly, but totally something that satisfies the child inside of you. With each bite, the French toast was sweet, warm, and just over the line of what you’d consider “breakfast” in the best way possible.
There was a richness to the filling, the softness of the bread, and a tart accent from the fruit cutting through it all. It’s the kind of dish you enjoy and simply take your time with it.
And I did.
What stood out most about Stacks on Route 66, for this second time, was how well it fit into the day. It wasn’t trying to be the main event for our day, but it was just setting us up for a good day. It’s a place to sit, ease into the morning, and fuel up before heading out to explore. A place that feels just as right the second time as it did the first. And honestly, that might be the best kind of restaurant. The one you come back to and the one that becomes part of the routine without requiring anything.
If you’re heading out to explore the parks nearby, this is the kind of stop that makes sense. And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
