There’s something special about a weekend that moves at its own rhythm. The kind of weekend where the only plans are to eat well, talk a little longer, and let the day unfold naturally. That’s exactly what happened when my friend Dominique and I met up at Tacolina on Sunset Boulevard. The restaurant is a bright and modern taqueria that is a gentle escape from the city noise, with the promise of good food and even better company.
From the moment we sat down, everything felt easy.
The space buzzed with a casual energy as sunlight spilled across colorful tableware and danced across plants. Once we looked over the menu, we both knew exactly what we wanted to order. As the day was warmer than expected, I decided to cool things down with a Watermelon Agua Fresca ($8), the vibrant red drink was a great balance of fruit and water where one didn’t outweigh the other. Lightly sweetened and topped with slices of lime, the flavor tasted like summer in a glass.
It wasn’t long before plates began to arrive at the table. We shared the Chips and Guacamole ($15). It was on the pricy side for the starter, but considering how much I was looking forward to an afternoon with my friend, I overlooked it. At Tacolina, the two are a familiar favorite. House-made tortilla chips and with creamy avocado blended with onion, jalapeño, and cilantro become difficult to resit—honestly, don’t bother trying. It was simple but perfect, the kind of snack that disappears before you even realize it. Then came the Yucca Fries ($10), golden and crisp with a tender bite inside. Paired with chipotle aioli and tomatillo sauce, they were unexpectedly addictive and a bit smoky and rich all at once.
The highlight of the meal was the plate of Shrimp Tacos ($18). Each tortilla cradled fried velvet shrimp topped with habanero chile salsa, pickled onions, and guacamole. Every bite carried a burst of a gentle spice and crunch balanced by the creamy coolness of avocado — the kind of taco that makes you pause mid-conversation just to appreciate and savor it to its fullness.
As we lingered at the table, conversation drifting between laughter and looking to the days ahead, Tacolina became more than just a meal spot; it was a reminder to slow down, enjoy each bite, and revel in the company of someone who knows your story and whose story you enjoy just as much.
