How I Fell for the Perfect Hojicha at Hoji Tea Community

There are cafes you like, and then there’s that one spot you unexpectedly fall into loving. Those kind of cafes are the type of places that become your go-to because they feel comfortable, the drinks are delicious, and the staff are a welcome part of your day. Recently, Hoji Tea Community in Pasadena has become that place. I stumbled upon the shop, ordered a drink, and ever since then the cozy tea shop is my happy little obsession throughout the day. Maybe even a few times in a day.

My introduction to Hoji started with a craving.

It was a busy day and I needed to try something different. I spent some time walking around the area to try and break the craving when I quickly found myself standing inside of Hoji hoping to get what I needed. Looking over their menu, I realized they didn’t have the standard drinks I’m so accustomed to. No caramel iced latte or hot vanilla chai existed there. Instead, it’s one size iced drinks full of vibrant flavors with enticing names. Strawberry Cloud, Avocado Bliss, or Oreo Uji Matcha to name a few. It didn’t take long for me to encounter the drink that would quickly become my now obsession: the Hojicha Blend. The drink boasts of using high quality hojicha leaves that are roasted to a powder and then combined with their signature house milk, and poured into a cream drizzled cup. From the first taste, it was smoky, rich, nutty, creamy and exactly what I didn’t know I needed all at once. After a few repeat visits and ordering the shop’s signature drink, I began to customize it. The same perfect drink just double blended and then covered with a cream top and a sprinkle of Oreos. The new additions give the drink a lighter sip through the straw with a crunchy texture and extra creaminess.

Before I could blink, this drink became my unofficial favorite.

What makes Hoji so special to me isn’t just the drink, it’s the ritual around getting the drink. I love pausing mid-day to wander over to their shop, watch the world go by as I sip, and soak in the calm minimalist atmosphere inside the café. It’s one of those spots that feels just as perfect for a quiet solo break as it does for catching up with a friend. Both which I’ve done multiple times.

Whether the day’s been rough, slow, or downright ordinary, a hojicha blend from Hoji somehow makes it feel better. The flavors give me exactly the boost I need and the neighborhood stroll afterward is an ideal way to savor the drink to completion.

If you’re ever in Pasadena and in need of a comforting drink with personality, this place is worth the visit.
