When it comes to sports across the world, there are fan favorite teams and athletes people rep as if they’re part of their family. Sports in all their forms hold a significant place in the lives of many and the FIFA World Cup is no different. As the event takes place every four years, when the World Cup comes around, the level of excitement may be bursting at the seams and the degree of what to expect may be a bit unknown. Why is that the case? Because with many annual events like basketball, you often know what’s going to take place since the event occurs pretty frequently. But when it comes to events like the World Cup, there are times where the scale of it doesn’t fully register until you’re standing in the middle of it.
That was my experience at the FIFA Fan Festival preview event held at the LA Memorial Coliseum (aka, Coliseum).
I was invited to attend a media preview alongside representatives from local and national outlets to get a first look at what visitors can expect when the Fan Festival runs from June 11-14 during the FIFA World Cup festivities. While I anticipated a celebration of soccer, what I found was something much bigger: a global event designed to bring people together through the love of sports and its players, food, music, culture, and the community surrounding it all. At its core, it’s an entire experience.
The FIFA Fan Festival transforms the historic Coliseum grounds into a gathering place where fans can spend hours exploring, learning, and discovering all things connected to the World Cup. Executed by Sequoia Productions, the team designed an experience that will not only capture attention but help guests connect to the event on a deeper level From giant viewing screens giving guests the chance to watch matches alongside thousands of fellow supporters, food vendors serving dishes from a variety cultures, interactive activities to engage attendees of all ages and interests, entertainment brining sound to every moment of the event, to sponsor activations with a festival atmosphere around every corner, Sequoia Productions created an unforgettable experience.
Seeing it all come together first-hand was one of my favorite parts of the preview. To receive a closer look at the food offerings and some of the sponsors who will be in attendance was incredibly rewarding.
As someone who plans entire trips around meals, I’m always curious about what visitors will be eating at an event. During the preview, the Legends Global team designed a menu of items showcasing food from the World Cup’s participating countries. A Beef Poutine from Canada, a Linguica Sandwich from Brazil, Croquettas de Pollo from Brazil, and Sausage Rolls from Australia, and a Gatsby Sub from South Africa were all available to try during the preview. If I can say, one common theme amongst all the countries was one of my favorite items: bread. Carbs aside, it was really nice to see Legends Global showing representation of the countries through food. Exposing some and familiarizing others with the cuisine of countries outside the United States was beautiful to see and a simple act that holds significant meaning.
During the Fan Festival, guests can dine with some of Los Angeles’ local favorite food trucks. Those include Aji Mori House, Cathy’s Cookies, Cuernavaca’s Grill, Fry Day Food Truck, Kogi BBQ. With this selection of meal options, there’s something to satisfy guests whether through Mexican, Korean-Mexican, Japanese, or desert.
The preview also offered guests a chance to meet some of the people and vendors helping bring the festival to life. From Coca Cola to UGREEN, attendees can explore the sponsor booth to learn more about the products and how they align with the World Cup. I really enjoyed getting to learn about UGREEN. It was nice to see how the brand is creating wireless charging products that people can take to events like the World Cup and charge their phones in a matter of minutes.
Additionally, listening to organizers explain their vision for the event reinforced something I kept noticing throughout the day: this is meant to be welcoming to everyone. That meaning, the festival is open to everyone from the soccer aficionado to those who are recent fans.
Of course, dedicated supporters will likely find themselves right at home surrounded by fellow fans cheering for their favorite teams and countries. But even those who know very little about the sport will still find plenty to appreciate. The energy, entertainment, and shared excitement create an atmosphere that’s hard not to get swept up in.
What also struck me was the feeling of anticipation.
The World Cup only comes around every four years, and for Los Angeles to play such an important role in the celebration feels special. The last time the US hosted the World Cup was in 1994. Now over twenty years later, this moment is big for the City of Angels. Standing inside the festival before the crowds arrive, it was easy to imagine the space filled with fans waving flags, celebrating goals, sharing meals, and creating memories together.
If the preview event was any indication, the FIFA Fan Festival won’t just be a place to watch soccer. It will be a place to experience Los Angeles at its most vibrant. And for anyone lucky enough to secure a ticket, it’s shaping up to be one of the city’s most exciting events of the year.
Whether you’re a devoted soccer fan or simply looking for a unique way to experience the excitement surrounding the World Cup, the FIFA Fan Festival feels like an event worth adding to your calendar. Come for the matches, stay for the food, enjoy the connection, and leave with the kind of memories that only happen when thousands of people gather to celebrate something they love.
