WeHo Bistro Has a Dinner So Pleasant You Could Never Forget It

I can’t remember anything.

I’ll joke that I have the same memory span of a goldfish and then seconds later I’ll wonder what I was laughing at. Of course it’s not amnesia, but if someone tells me a story chances are I won’t remember it a week later. One thing I never seem to forget are the evenings that I have over food. It may seem odd, but the time that elapses over plates somehow remain imprinted in my mind long after the dining experience has ended. Whether I’m eating with friends or on a solo date, I can recall them easily. Such was the case when I went to WeHo Bistro in West Hollywood.Follow My Gut, FMG, Danielle N. I’ve been the restaurant for brunch before, but this time I returned to try their dinner. That meant there would be no grilled cheese waffles or toast with almond butter. See how I remembered that? Instead, the dinner started out with bread and oil and was quickly followed by a Cheese Platter (small $14, large $18). The board consisted of Pointe Reyes blue cheese, coastal white cheddar, comte, and Delice de Bourgogne. The task at hand was to find a favorite and devour it before the next plate arrived. The blue cheese definitely wasn’t in the running to be a favorite as that’s just a taste I have never acquired. However, I did find myself going between the other cheeses, the fruit, and the marmalade equally. Bouncing back and forth between the smooth and creamy cheeses, the blackberries and apple slices, and the juiciness of the marmalade was easy to do. Does that make me a glutton? Sure, but I like to call it an equal opportunist.

As the fancy starters atop the platter began to disappear, the entree arrived. The Genoa Pasta ($24) was well worth the seemingly long (but actually normal) wait. To be honest, any time I have to wait for food feels like eternity even if the actual wait is relatively short. On a pure white plate were spaghetti noodles that were covered in a pesto sauce that was topped with six jump tiger shrimp. The plate looked nice, but it was the smell that drew me in. I loved how nicely the shrimp were sautéed in a light olive oil alongside garlic because it gave them such a simple taste. The shrimp were perfect for the velvety pesto sauce. Spinning it around the fork was almost graceful and the taste was simply delicious. Although I didn’t finish it all, it was great dish to showcase the way the restaurant can make a simple dish taste exceptional.

I didn’t finish the pasta as dessert arrived. It was the Le Petit Sensation ($9). Two ice cream sandwiches held vanilla ice cream pressed between gluten free chocolate chip cookies. I couldn’t tell the difference if they had or didn’t have gluten because the cookies were delicious. They weren’t so hard that they broke off at the touch and not too soft that they meshed into the ice cream. What I liked most was the ice cream sandwiches had a drizzle of raspberry sauce which amped the flavor of the dessert. With it, the simple sandwich had a burst of fruitiness that made me feel like a little kid! A little kid with adult bills, but a kid nonetheless.

I’ve come to terms with the fact that I may not remember every story I’m told because I know that there are events I will recall. Thankfully, the dinners I have such as this at WeHo Bistro won’t escape me. Times like these were I’m presented with a gorgeous selection of plates will remain in my mind and heart long after I leave the restaurant. It’s these types of moments and these kinds of meals that I wish to have every day or in the least, as often as god and father time will allow.
