Donut Friend in Highland Park

The other day my coworker asked me the most random question, “What’s your favorite nut?”

I thought about it for a second and responded, “Donut.”

Peanuts are overrated, walnuts are ok, but donuts are always perfect.

Ever since he asked me that, I struggled to have a stream of thoughts without one of them being about a sweet doughy confectionery. Thankfully, my friend Sara read my gut and said we should go to Donut Friend in Highland Park. My only question, “Whose car are we taking?”

I went to the shop when it first opened in 2013 and spent a good amount of money on crafted donuts. However on this day, I would try to control myself. I like Donut Friend because the store is bright, sprightly, and has just the right amount of hipster. The reason why I love Donut Friend is because they are exactly as they have been described: the Cold Stone of donuts. You can choose your style of donut, add fillings, and pile on as many toppings as you want! My fat kid prayers have been answered.

Once we burst through the doors, Sara and I took a peak over the display of donut fantasies. They have an array of premade donuts to choose form, or you can create your own. We did the latter. Sara got a traditional (glazed) donut with chocolate glaze, vanilla pastry cream, and strawberries ($3.50). Of course She didn’t let me have any of hers, but considering how quickly she devoured it, I can only assume it was delicious.

I got a traditional donut with vanilla bean glaze, strawberries, and (prepare yourself) Thin Mint crumbles ($3.50). My donut was exactly what I needed. Super sweet, soft, sticky, and fattening. Seeing them make it to then getting my hands on it made me so happy. It was exactly what I wanted and it tasted better than I expected.

It was hard not to order another, but the one I had definitely hit the spot. With my craving satisfied, I can easily say Donut Friend will be seeing more of me. I don’t mean that in the creepy “waving outside your door” stalker way, more in the “telling everyone I know “ loyal customer way.
