Open Source Organics Knows How to Make Healthy Food Taste Delicious

I can openly admit my faults and one of them is that I’m not the healthiest eater.

You can probably tell from all my high caloric reviews or the way I walk around with my pants button undone. However you come to that conclusion, I am trying to eat better. That doesn’t mean I’m giving up on the pasta, pizza, and donut chicken sandwiches, but it does mean that when I have lettuce on my burger, I won’t take it off. That counts as a salad right? In an effort to incorporate healthier options into my day, I Follow My Gut, FMG, Danielle N. Salmon, foodie, blog, LA food blog, LA Foodie, food blog, restaurant blog, restaurant discovery, eateries, food porn, where to eat in LA, Hollywood, Open Source Organics, healthy eating, acai bowl, smoothie, juice, shots, healthygrabbed breakfast from a location that I hoped could help put me on a positive track. That location is Open Source Organics.

The small shop sits just off of Sunset Boulevard and La Brea. The area can be a chaotic intersection of tourist hoping to see celebrities and locals trying to avoid the tourists. As a backdrop to all the people walking by is Open Source Organics. The small wellness bar carries a range of superfood smoothies, tonix, hot elixirs, wellness shots, and acai bowls. Standing in the shop looking at the menu I didn’t see a single burger, not even a cheeseburger smoothie. “What the heck should I order then?” I thought. At this rate, I was pretty much open to any and everything. I asked one of the team members her suggestions and she decided to figure it all out for me.

The first to come out was a trio of shots. On a wooden board came the Wellness ($2), Replenish ($3), and Recovery ($3). The idiotic girl in me hoped there was tequila in the shots, but then I looked where I was and realized a wellness bar wouldn’t serve tequila. Out of the three shots, I tried the Recovery first. The vibrant red color caught my eye and it was all thanks to the beets. Not to be forgotten, it was also mixed with zeolite, lemon, and ginger. From the first sip the beets were the only thing that I could taste. Knowing that I don’t like beets, I gave this an honest try but didn’t like it. A few more sips later and the lemon and ginger began to creep through. As I downed it, the strength of the ingredients came together towards the end. So much so that it felt hot and as if it were going to burn my esophagus. Or maybe it was burning the fat off of my body from the inside out? Regardless, it was spicy. I put the shot glass down and didn’t look at that one again as if it had done wrong by me—technically it did.

This shot took chlorella, cayenne, lemon, and ginger. It had small seeds at the base of the glass and I could tell it should be stirred. I didn’t do it because I feared it would increase the intensity of it. Instead, I left it alone and drank it quickly. As the shot made its way over my taste-buds and down my throat I thought I was going to die. Not seriously, just in the most literal hypothetical situation possible. I underestimated the severity of this shot based on its size and color when I shouldn’t have. I don’t know  how people drink these voluntarily, but if it’s enhancing their life, then I might give it another try. Might. The final shot was the Replenish. It took turmeric, fulvic acid, wheatgrass, lemon, and ginger. The same sour and sharp tastes from the lemon and the ginger (respectively) that were in the other shots were here as well. In comparison to the others, I liked this one. It had a gentle gritty texture and was mild. In this shot, the ginger was prominent to accent the taste within the glass. It was much more easier to drink and as a result, it was my favorite of them all.

As I started to regain feeling in my throat I realized I might be too fat for wellness shots. Or maybe, I just need to get used to them? Either way, for the folks who love shots, I’m sure these will be perfect for you. I, on the other hand, love smoothies. When my order of the Almond Butter Protein ($10) came out I was more than ready for it. The superfood smoothie took almonds, cacao powder, cinnamon, maca pink salt, cardamom, dates, and hemp seeds. It was a combination of some of the healthiest and tastiest ingredients that I could have asked for! It didn’t take long for me to try it and when I did I was so happy. The smoothie was so rich, thick, and creamy. I loved how it was chocolaty without being chalky and that it was so thick that it was almost filling. There was so many delicious components to this smoothie that I was sad when it was gone. The temptation to get a second was so strong until I saw the acai bowl I had ordered. It was huge!

When I say that the acail bowl was huge I mean that in both width and depth. The ACAI Monkey Magic Bowl ($12) comes in a bowl that holds so much! It was full of acai, bananas, pears, blueberries, apples, pink salt, and maca. This is more than enough food for one person and it could easily serve as breakfast and lunch. I liked how light the acai was so that it wasn’t too thick and chunky. It was such a fruity and somewhat sweet acai that I almost wanted to grab the bowl with both hands, take the brim it to my mouth, and drink it. But that would look weird and people would stare at me. But considering the part of Hollywood I was in, I might fit in actually. The best part of the bowl is that it was packed with so many slices of fruit. The fresh pears and apples to the scattered blueberries was exactly what I needed. Even more, it came with coconut shavings and granola pieces that enhanced the overall flavor. If this was what healthy eating was like, I started to think that it wouldn’t be so bad after all.

After my breakfast at Open Sources Organics, I realize that I have another place where I can grab delicious healthy food. I’m not sure whether my saying I need to eat better propelled the universe to send Open Source Organics my way, but if it did then I’m glad it happened. While it feels as if my body can’t take the intensity of the wellness shots, I know there are people out there who would love each and everyone of them. I’ll keep my throat and taste buds safe and will spend my time and money exploring more of their packed smoothies and their massive bowls. Hopefully, the more I have them I’ll be able to drop some pounds and finally go back to keeping my pants buttoned.

  1. Lettuce on a burger defiantly counts as a salad. I pull the lettuce off of all sandwiches; I will eat it, but I don’t want it messing with my food lol. Open Source Organics looks bomb-diggity, I wish there was a location near me. Those little shots of goodness are right up my alley, but that ACAI Monkey Magic Bowl looks downright decadent.

    1. OMGut I knew I couldn’t be the only one who felt that way. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool but I don’t have to have lettuce on my burger! But those shots were so harsh for me however I can totally see why other people would like it. You and your dope fitness lifestyle could totally have some and it jump start your day =]

  2. I really like your blog. you talk about so many amazing spots I really want to check out only I’m so far away. When I finally get to visit California, I’d have to check at least one of these places. 🙂
