Get Your Churro Fix at Churrería General de la República

You just read the headline of this post, clicked the review, and I have a feeling that I know what you’re thinking.

“Churreria, is that as heavenly as it sounds?”

If that sentence or even one similar crossed your mind then the answer is yes and I am a psychic, maybe just lucky. Whether I’m psychic or lucky is irrelevant when it comes to this post, instead what is important to know is that while on vacation in Mexico City my friends and I stumbled upon a delicious churro stop. As you can probably decipher from the name, a churrería is a small eatery that sells, wait for it, churros. While exploring the and historic Coyoacán, I saw a few churro stands and couldn’t decide on which place to go. In an attempt to quickly get as many churros in my hand as possible, I pointed my finger and spun in  circle only stopping when I got dizzy. My finger directed us to Churrería General de la República and in that moment a decision was made.

Churreria #1

The small brick shop sat on a busy corner that had locals and tourists bustling by. It was a bit difficult to get through so we ended up making our way inside in an almost double-dutch style. Although the surrounding area was alive and active, the inside was quiet, dim, and tiny. It was a complete contrast from the exterior which was a bit unexpected. Maybe we just missed the rush. Since there were no tables or chairs, it was clear this was a place where you grab your churros and go. As the only people in the shop, we took a second to look over the menu and ordered a bunch to split.

As a churro lover, it was an obvious decision to go with a sugar flavor; it’s a classic! in addition to that, we also went with a vanilla and strawberry (price unavailable) and a few others. The only one’s that I cared to devour were the three in my hand. Diving face first into them, they were delicious! They were freshly made so the first thing that stood out as how were warm they were. That in turn made the syrups melt and beautifully cascade down the churros. The next thing that caught my attention was the crisp and sugary exterior. That alone made it hard not to lick my lips with each bite. Finally, my favorite part was how soft they were on the inside. While the churros were long, part of me was really hoping for a thick batch but these were still really good.

As a quick stop during our explorations of the Coyoacán area, Churrería General de la República was a good stop. While I don’t recall the price of the churros, I do know they were inexpensive. There’s a good chance that other churreria’s in the area would have had bigger churros with more toppings, but the ones we had here were nice. I would suggest it to someone walking by, but I wouldn’t consider it a go-to spot. Instead, simply give it a shot and if you find yourself licking your lips lick I did, then consider it a good move.

  1. Okay I need to get myself down to Mexico City ASAP! Some of the best churros (con chocolate) that I’ve had were at Chocolatería San Ginés in Madrid… But these look like they might compete. Yum! Thanks for sharing

  2. As a newbie to churros– if you can believe that– I never realized how many varieties there were! My exposure has been Costco’s food court – and only when I could snag a bite of my son’s. I’m now seriously craving one. Thanks for the great post!

    1. First off, I’m glad your son shares his churro with you because it would be hard for me to share with anyone. Buuuut now that you see there are so many varieties it means you have to get all of them and find a favorite. Then when you do, lemme know which won one you over!
