There’s something about Portland mornings that invite you to slow down and simply appreciate the time you have and the environment you’re in. The air feels softer, the streets have a friendly chatter, and the day unfolds with ease instead of urgency. On one of those easy mornings, I found myself at Broder for my first visit and it ended up setting the tone for the entire day.
I had this restaurant on my list prior to coming to Portland for a work conference. What solidified them as a place I wanted to visit was my interest in exploring more Danish food in as many places as I can access. Seeing their menu and finding Danish pancakes available to order was all I needed to lock them in. Before the day of sessions began, my colleague and I stopped at this quaint cafe. A bit of wait was expected, and happened, but once our names were called (about 25 minutes later) we were ready to order. I started the meal with a hot Oat Milk Latte ($6) because, in my world, no slow morning truly begins without one. It arrived creamy without being heavy, on the sweet side, and each sip felt like it gave me permission to ease into the day.
As the latte began to disappear, the Aebleskivers with Maple Syrup ($12) arrived. The Danish pancake spheres are visually adorable. When it comes to how they taste, they’re delightful. Beautifully brown, sprinkled with powdered sugar like snow, lightly crisp on the outside and tender inside. The tiny pancakes came with a side of lemon curd and lingonberry jam and while I tried them out, they weren’t flavors I cared much for. A tart curd and subtle flavored jam were good, but the syrup was more my speed. The dish was simple but special, and has a way of feeling nostalgic even if you didn’t grow up eating it, like myself.
To balance it all, I added the Pear Parfait ($7). Fresh sliced pears layered with yogurt and a heavy heaping of granola brought brightness to the table. It was light, crunchy, and thoughtfully composed making it the kind of breakfast item that leaves you feeling satisfied and energized.
What I loved most about Broder breakfast was the obvious: the food. I thoroughly enjoyed the plates and equally liked how naturally everything fit into the rhythm of the morning. No rush. No overplanning. Just good coffee, comforting food, and the quiet joy of being present on a gentle morning in a new city.
If you’re in Portland and craving a breakfast that feels cozy, Broder is the kind of place that makes an ordinary morning feel like a small, beautiful ritual.
