Starting the Road Trip to Pinnacles at 24th Street Café

Some trips start in the best way possible. And that was the case for myself and my boyfriend just before we started a road trip to Pinnacles National Park. Somewhere between the early departure and car conversation, our hunger began to slowly build. It was obvious as we were now miles from home that we needed to stop for breakfast. Thankfully, I already had a place in mind and we were on our way before reaching the park.

Sitting inside 24th Street Café felt like we picked the perfect place to start our road trip. It’s a diner at heart that is comfortable, charming, a tad lively, and filled with the kind of energy that tells you the food is going to be good before it even arrives.

Looking over the menus in hand, it didn’t take long for us to know what to get. With a well-planned out menu, there are clear breakfast combinations that can fit whatever one may want in the moment. The only requirement we needed? It had to be something delicious and something that would carry us through the day we had planned ahead.

Ordering just the right dishes, we got exactly that: a nice combination of what we needed and wanted to start the trip.

To the table came plates of a little bit of everything (meal name and prices unavailable). Shared between my boyfriend and I were crispy hash browns, scrambled eggs mixed with bits of ham, all warm and satisfying in the way breakfast is supposed to be. The hash browns had that perfect golden layer on top, giving way to something softer underneath, while the eggs brought everything together. It was simple, yet done just right.

In addition to the first plates were the next classics of bacon, eggs, and a side of potatoes that had just enough crisp to them, alongside sautéed peppers and onions that added a little extra flavor to each bite. It was the kind of plate that doesn’t try to impress you, it just works to make you happy.

And then there was the biscuit with gravy.

Something that I’ve loved, but recently am becoming obsessed with. Soft, fluffy, and paired with a side of gravy that felt like it had been made and not rushed. It’s the kind of addition you don’t necessarily have to have, but once it’s plated in front of you, you’re glad you got it.

There’s something about meals like this that feel especially good before a day of exploring. Maybe it’s the anticipation of what’s ahead, or maybe it’s just the comfort of sitting down and taking your time before everything begins. Either way, 24th Street Cafe ended up being more than just a stop along the way, it was a great way to start the trip. A restaurant with the ability to give your trip the momentum it needs and to fill your stomach as best as possible.

And honestly, that’s all you really need from a breakfast spot.
