West Coast Tavern in San Diego

I’m not much of a breakfast person. Not the type of girl who wakes up on a Sunday morning eager to get the girls together and chit chat over the so-called, “most important meal of the day”. As an unfortunate result, brunch gets the short end of the fork by slight association. Although I’m not keen to either meals, it doesn’t mean I’m opposed to them should that be my only option. Not too long ago some friends and I went to West Coast Tavern in San Diego. I thought we were just in time for lunch until the brunch menu was placed in front of me. Whatever, I’ll order something. I made the decision to get the biscuits and gravy ($10) with the hope of       confusing my taste buds into thinking it was just a mushy cake. That didn’t work, but I was glad that it didn’t because it was the best simple brunch I have ever had!

How this San Diego tavern managed to take such a simple meal and make it taste like it came out of a Beverly Hills bistro is beyond me. I can’t pinpoint which part of the plate was my favorite, but the collaboration of all the pieces tasted the way an orchestrated performance by Gustavo Dudamel sounds. The eggs were fluffy and subtly seasoned. The sausage had a hint of spice that flowed with each juicy bite. The gravy was so smooth and complimented each item it was drizzled over. And then there was the incredibly soft biscuit which had to be made of the clouds that hover of Jesus and his holy angels in heaven. An exaggeration? Maybe. Pretty accurate? Definitely.

A friend ordered a breakfast burrito ($11) that was packed with bacon, eggs, and potatoes. To top it all off, she got a lemonade and the two together were so spot on delicious that I couldn’t help but assist her in finishing her meal. Although she didn’t ask for the help and even pushed me away at times, I was still there for her because that’s just the type of good friend that I am.

Please know, this was just my brunch experience. I will make a trip to go back to have their dinner sometime soon. When I do I might die, go to heaven, and persuade Jesus to send me back just so I can eat it again. Then He’ll send me back down to earth and I’ll go back to West Coast Tavern, I’ll die again, go to heaven, persuade Jesus to send me back, and you know the cycle.
