Dupar’s in Los Angeles

If you ever come out to LA then it’s most likely to visit the places you’ve seen on TV or heard in stories. You may want to go to the Griffith Observatory because you saw a shot of it in Basketball Wives. Or, you may want to visit the Korean Bell of Friendship because a friend said it was “a sight to see”. Whatever gets you to visit the City of Angels, will be the same thing that you daydream about when you’re back home. In between all the things you do in the city, you’re going to get hungry. Just as you’ve accumulated a list of places to experience in Los Angeles, there is also a list of restaurants you have to savor. The Griddle Café, Roscoe’s on Pico, and a spot that I went to recently: Dupar’s at the Farmer’s Market.

I went Dupar’s with a friend to finally check the restaurant off my foodie list, plus we were both hungry and it was close by. This location sits at the Original Farmer’s Market next to The Grove and was voted “Best Pancakes in Los Angeles” by LA Weekly so I was keen to find out what made them so great. After sitting in the restaurant and looking over the menu, I knew exactly what I wanted. I ordered the Blue Plate #2 ($9.95). It came with two hot cakes, one egg (any way), and bacon or turkey links. I got my eggs scrambled and a side of turkey links. The eggs and links were fine, but the taste wasn’t so remarkable to write a review about them. Instead, they simply supported the pancakes. However, the pancakes were worth a review.

While I haven’t had every pancake in this city, I can say that these pancakes just might be the best. They are like a throwback to those your grandmother made on a Saturday morning. The kind your girlfriend makes when she wants to convince you she’s wifey material, (I’ve done this). There wasn’t anything drastically different to make it easy to pinpoint their pancake success. It’s just clear that Dupar’s knows how to make a good pancake without any fluff. Actually there was a lot of fluff. They were incredibly soft and fluffy. The buttermilk hotcakes also came with grade AA melted butter that soaked into the pancakes. And that isn’t any regular butter,  this butter is sweet, gentle, and is made with high quality sweet cream.  Then there was the warm and sweet maple syrup that made you close your eyes in a moment of silence to best enjoy the meal. It was just right and I loved it.Follow My Gut, FMG, Danielle Salmon, Danielle N. If you’re a tourist visiting LA, you must go to this restaurant. If you a local who hasn’t been to Dupar’s in a while, then do your gut a favor and rediscover them. You’ll be glad you did.

  1. It was important that my friend take me here because David Lynch was once here writing Twin Peaks and at the same time I come here having irreverent flashbacks of the same era. The amazingly awful gold chandeliers, carpet and brown furniture hit me with memories of growing up and eating at a diner in Morris County, New Jersey circa 1990.
