Discovering Distinto Vinícola: A Casual Visitor’s Journey into Valle de Guadalupe Wine

I’ve never called myself a wine enthusiast. I enjoy a glass here and there, usually more for the experience or the company than much else. However, when I visited Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico’s celebrated wine region, I wasn’t expecting to leave with a list of favorites. But Distinto Vinicola changed that.

From the moment I arrived, I paused to take in the location and all it entailed. There was a natural beauty, a modern charm, and a unique entrance to capture attention. Within it all there was an inviting calm. Rows of vines, the valley breeze, and a genuine welcome that felt more personal than polished. The real magic happened when I stepped into their wine cellar. Cool, dimly lit, and lined with oak barrels, the cellar felt like a secret waiting to be told.

This visit was for a tour and tasting. After exploring the wine cellar, we sat ready for the tasting to begin. As bottles were opened and glasses were filled, we learned about the origin of the winery. Founded by three friends in Ensenada in 2010, they started renting wine spaces and making their own wine fueled by the love of the craft. Not long after, they honed their skills in the wine process, began producing more wine and labeled their own bottles – Distinto.

Throughout the tasting, our guide encouraged us not to worry about “knowing” wine but to simply explore it, follow flavors, ask questions, and pause on all the things that resonate. With each pour, I found myself surprised. A crisp Sauvignon Blanc that tasted like summer afternoons, a bold Nebbiolo Interpreté that lingered with earthy depth, and a 2022 Tempranillo-Merlot that became my favorite.

What I appreciated most was that Distinto Vinícola wasn’t about intimidating jargon, who knows the most, or pretension. It was about connection to the vine, to the craft, and to the joy of discovering something new. By the end, I didn’t just leave with a bottle tucked under my arm. I left with flavors and an unexpected spark of appreciation for wine as both art and adventure.

Whether you’re a seasoned collector or, like me, someone who just enjoys exploring a glass now and then, Distinto Vinícola offers a journey worth taking.
