Shaky Alibi in Los Angeles

This past Saturday I planned to go about my normal routine: hear my gym alarm go off at 7am, pull the covers over my face for an extra hour, and then crawl outta my bed like girl from The Grudge to get dressed. Instead of doing my usual, my friend and I decided we would grab breakfast and then go to Amoeba in Hollywood for Record Store Day. I don’t have a turntable so I didn’t care about the record holiday, but since he was driving to the restaurant I was kind of trapped. The place of choice was Shaky Alibi on Beverly Blvd.

I found out about this spot thanks to an article dineLA wrote, The Best Waffles in LA. The list included 10 restaurants, but since Shaky Alibi was in closest proximity to the record store, it was a done deal. Shakey Alibi sits on the corner of Beverly and Martel and is near the Buzzfeed office. Since it’s on the main street, there’s tons of potential foot traffic and (of course) bad driver traffic. It’s a medium size space with indoor and outdoor seating, a coffee bar, and art from local artists that decorate the walls to make it feel cozy. On the menu, they serve coffees, teas, poached eggs, and traditional waffles, but they’re known for their Liege waffles. And that’s what we were going to get!

Our waitress Cory (probably spelling that wrong, sorry) walked us through the menu and gave her suggestions. I liked her because I was originally going to order a hot chocolate and then she mentioned the latte and that I could add flavors to it. With that, she was awesome in my book. I first ordered a Pistachio Latte (Regular Latte – $3.75 + pistachio flavor – $0.75, $4.50 total). My latte was so delicious! The pistachio flavoring was perfectly balanced with the espresso and steamed milk that it tasted delightful. It was creamy, sweet, and had an easy amount of pick-me-up to it. It made me feel like people in coffee commercials who have all the time in the morning to stand in their kitchen smiling out the window at absolutely nothing. I dig you Folgers, but today, this drink was the best part of waking up.

For my breakfast, I ordered the Traditional Liege waffle ($5.50) with toppings of strawberries, blueberries, and pecans, and Speculoos Belgium crunchy spread ($0.99 each, $9.50 total). The waffle itself isn’t big. It’s small, but it’s thick and feels solid. That firmness of the waffle makes it perfect to add so many toppings as it won’t mush through or fall apart. This was my first time having the Speculoos spread and my only comparison was Crunchy Butter from Trader Joe’s. This spread tastes like that, only 1,000 times better. It’s so decadent that you have to get it on your waffle. No for real, don’t think about it. Just get it. The juiciness of the fruit blended well with the spread and then marrying it with the waffle made the entire combination an enjoyable breakfast. Only thing, it’s high on the sugary-side, so prepare to have a sugar overload or at least get pretty close to one.

My friend got the Traditional Liege waffle ($5.50) with bananas, dark chocolate, and Speculoos Belgium crunchy spread ($8.50 total). He didn’t share so I don’t know how it tasted. I barely got to take any pictures of it. He’s my friend, but he has a superhuman power of being a jerk. Don’t worry, he’ll regret that later.

I really liked this breakfast and was happy I rolled out of bed for it. After we finished eating, we went to Amoeba as planned. Only problem, there was a line of people that wrapped around the block. When I saw that, an evil smirk glided across my face. “Oh is your little store too packed for you my friend? Maybe if you shared your waffle this wouldn’t have happened.” Maybe next time, he’ll think twice before he decides to mess with my gut!
