En Sushi in Los Feliz

Whenever you ask a person what their favorite sushi dishes are, the answer (more often than not) tends to be elaborate. Octopus rolls, shime saba, fugu sashi, or salmon skin rolls. (I had to Google those because I really don’t know any fancy sushi dishes). But if you ask me what my favorite dishes are, the answer is tragically simple: California rolls! And if I’m feeling adventurous, shrimp tempura rolls. I know, I live life on the edge. The problem is, I just haven’t found a restaurant that can serve me up sushi that I actually like. But I haven’t given up hope, I’m optimistic that I’ll find a place–miracles do happen. If Justin Bieber can stop saying various forms of the word ‘swag’, I’m sure I can find this restaurant. Until then, I’ll just eat great simple sushi. Swaggie.

To continue living my life on the cusp of excitement, my friend and I went to En Sushi. Actually, we wanted to go to a different restaurant but it was closed for filming; typical LA area bullshit. Since our planned spot was out of the question we went up the street and decided to go to En Sushi. The dimly lit interior and slightly cool (but not trying to be cool) décor seemed inviting. But the part that got us to slide into a table was it was happy hour! Is that the sound of savings I hear ringing in my wallet? Yes, yes it is.

The happy hour menu kicks off every day from 5:30pm to 7:00pm, but on Thursday and Sunday they add a late night happy hour from 9:00pm to 10:30pm. The menu had some decent prices: appetizers for $4.50, sushi rolls for $4.00, and $5.00 specialty drinks. The specialty rolls for $6.00 were a little pricey so I didn’t get one…even though it was the shrimp tempura. Smallest violin plays a sad song for this gut. We ended up getting the Sake ($4.00), Sesame Fried Chicken ($4.50), Gyoza ($4.00), Salmon Cucumber Roll ($4.00), Albacore Jalapeno Roll ($4.00), and here it comes the California Roll ($4.00)! Did you think I wouldn’t order it? Come on now!

Overall all of the food was good. The dumplings were nice and easy to enjoy. They were very similar to ones I’ve had at other restaurants so there was really no risk with these. The only dish that I could do without was the sesame fried chicken. It was ok, but that was it. There wasn’t truly anything special about them so they end up being a good dish to add if you’re starving, but one you really don’t need to ponder about ordering.

The rolls opposite the appetizers were remarkably delicious. The California roll was fresh, light, and made me want another plate. I even tried the jalapeno roll. I shouldn’t have. I should have eased into that roll by having something simpler first, but no I wanted to a big girl. It didn’t happen, especially since I got kind of teary-eyed. It was a great way for me to look like I belonged in a Pampers commercial; not as the mom, but the crying baby.

As a whole, I dig the restaurant. It’s in a nice location, has a relaxing vibe, and serves up good food. I guess I should thank the LA filming because without it, we wouldn’t have stumbled upon this restaurant. But the minute they take up all the good parking, consider this thankful moment forgotten!
